Get an early start to the day and drive south of Lake Placid to visit two of the Adirondacks’ finest examples of Great Camps, which were summer homes built by the nation’s most elite families in the late 1800s. Visiting these Great Camps will provide a glimpse into the decadent lives of the nation’s wealthiest patrons of the 19th century and highlight why they chose to spend their summers in the Adirondacks.

Your first stop will be Great Camp Sagamore, a wilderness retreat built in 1897 which once belonged to the Vanderbilt family. Take a guided tour of the rustic property and it’s grand interior before enjoying a picnic lunch and continuing the journey to the next Great Camp.

Great Camp Santanoni is considered one of the most sophisticated and distinguished of all of the surviving great camps in the Adirondacks. Take a horse-drawn carriage down the 9-mile road which leads to the Main House Complex, and embark on a guided tour of the expansive grounds and historic ruins.

Afterward, enjoy the scenic drive back to Lake Placid and have dinner at Great Adirondack Brewing Company, a family-owned, casual dining restaurant overlooking beautiful Mirror Lake.

Begin the day with a scenic ride to the northern edge of the Adirondacks where you’ll visit a small, Organic Maple Syrup Farm and learn about the process of making sweet, fine maple syrup.

Then journey down the Adirondack Coast Wine Trail which stretches for miles between the Adirondack Mountains and the western shores of Lake Champlain. Enjoy the ride down quiet country roads as you pass by family farmland, orchards and vineyards. Stop for a wine tasting or two and discover the flavors of this new and upcoming wine region. The grapes grown in this area are hearty and robust, made to withstand the harsh northern winters. Many of the wines you’ll sample are made from grapes that have only been introduced to the world in the last decade or so, making this a completely unique experience!

Finally, return to Lake Placid and enjoy a delightful Farewell Dinner at The View, Lake Placid’s only AAA Four Diamond - rated restaurant. Take in the beautiful lake views as you recount tales of your adventure in the Adirondack Mountains.
